Many surgeons continue to discount women’s wishes for aesthestic flat closure (AFC) and push them toward reconstruction for reasons of deeply ingrained societal norms and training. Insurance companies can refuse to cover surgery for AFC but are forced by law to cover reconstruction with implants. Companies that produce implants fund the research on reconstruction. Re/construction explores how we got here, through the lens of the women who are fighting for the right to the dignity of bodily autonomy.
